For years I used my own gifts against myself and had no idea that was what I was doing.
That is how an unconscious wound works. It runs underneath everything and you mistake its voice for your own thinking, so you never question it. You just obey.
The critic was already in me, long before I could see it, and it was never satisfied. A taskmaster. Always one more thing to earn before I was allowed to rest. It just needed a tool sharp enough to do its work, and I happened to have one. The clear sight, the part of me that could walk into a room and feel what nobody was saying, find the weak place in a plan before it broke. It picked that up and turned it inward. The sight itself was never the problem. It was just the cleanest blade in the drawer.
And what was driving it went down further than I understood at the time, into roots I would not really meet until years later. For now it is enough to say I carried something that would not let me rest in just being. Being was never enough. There always had to be more.
I could feel two questions under all of it, though I could not have told you their names back then. One was whether I was enough, apart from what I got done, apart from how useful I made myself to everyone. The other one lived lower, in the body, and it was the louder of the two. Am I safe to stop? If I put it all down, the watching, the holding, the managing of every outcome, does the whole thing come apart in my hands?
That second one was the engine. It kept me vigilant and it kept the anxiety humming just under the surface. It was the part that needed to control, that needed to defend, because when a body does not feel safe, control is the closest thing it can find. And somewhere beneath all of it, way down under the armor and the watchfulness, was the actual me. Soft. Waiting to find out she was allowed out.
We are run by these woundings until we can feel them for what they are. That is the whole turn. Not fixing yourself, not improving, just getting the buried thing up into the light long enough to actually feel it. What you can feel completely stops running you from the dark.
I think of those years now as the forge.
In the old alchemy, gold was never made from gold. You started with the base material, the dark unpromising stuff, and you put it in the fire and held it there until it changed. The heat was not a punishment. It was the process. The proving, the over-functioning, the armor, all of it was raw matter being slowly turned, under pressure, into something clear.
What finally came out was not dramatic. Just the quiet fact that I had nothing to prove and never did. And that is the kind of thing the body has to learn all the way down. The mind can agree with it in an afternoon. The body takes years.
But it does learn. The critic is a whisper now, more a curious companion than a judge. The need to be right loosened into something I like much better, the freedom to simply see, to let other people be wrong, and to not need the point. You would not believe the room that opens up when you stop guarding a worth that was never actually on trial.
The part that surprised me was where the work happened. It was all on the inside.
I used to think I had to manage how people saw me, prove I had changed, get everyone still braced for the old version to update their picture of me. None of that was ever mine to do. The whole shift happened in one place, within, and once the inside softened the outside had nothing left to defend. The old reflex to make my case still shows up now and then. It just does not run the show anymore.
We draw to us whatever matches the energy we are actually carrying. When I was organized around proving, I kept meeting situations that asked me to keep proving. The armor always found something to be armor against. But a softer inner state does not need a guard at the gate. It is not calling the fight in. The defenses came down not because I decided to be more open, but because the body finally registered it was safe to stop.
That is what sovereignty feels like from the inside. Not a wall, not a fortress. Just a quiet return to myself, where I am whole whether you understand me or not. I am not here for the approval or the applause. I do not rent you space in my head, or in my body, while I wait for you to change your mind about me.
The relationships that matter were never the ones I had to defend. They are the ones with reciprocity, with safety, with the freeness to be exactly who we are, not always in agreement but always in alignment with love. Armor never drew those in. The softening did, because it let the real me come through, and the real me is who they were a match for all along.
If you are in the forge right now, your own gift turned against you, proving and proving, I am not going to tell you to skip it. You cannot. But I will tell you the shape of the other side so you know it is real. The gift comes back clean. What it was always meant for returns. What turned it against you lets go. The armor falls away on its own, not because you forced it down, but because the part of you that needed it finally got to rest.
You were never the base material.
You were always the gold the fire was for.
